How to care for a leather belt
Cowhide leather is hard-wearing, but it is still a natural material that lives and develops a patina. A few simple steps are enough to keep your belt beautiful and supple.
Condition the leather
Two to three times a year, apply a thin layer of leather conditioning cream or lotion with a soft cloth. Leave it to soak in for a few minutes, then buff. The leather stays supple and won't crack around the holes and the buckle.
Clean gently
Dust regularly with a dry cloth. If it gets dirty, use a barely damp cloth and a mild soap, then leave to air-dry, away from radiators. For a grease stain, Fuller's earth, a highly absorbent clay, gives excellent results.
Avoid moisture and heat
A wet belt should dry slowly at room temperature. Avoid direct heat sources, which dry out and distort the leather.
Preserve its shape
- If possible, alternate between two belts: the leather gets a rest and loses its shape less.
- Don't always pull it overly tight on the same hole.
- Store your belt hanging by its buckle, or loosely rolled up, never folded.
Metallic and rhinestone belts
For metallic, printed or rhinestone-embellished finishes, avoid applying any product to the decorated surface: a soft, dry cloth is all you need.
